Announcing the GWC Customer Recognition Awards: How a WebSphere Business Partner Solution Saved KLM Royal Dutch Airlines $1million USD Per Year in Application Deployment Costs
The Global WebSphere Community announced the second annual GWC Customer Recognition Awards this month. These awards showcase customer solutions using IBM products and technologies brought to life with the help of Business Partners. One of the previous GWC Customer Awards winners — KLM Royal Dutch Airlines — was kind enough to provide us with an update on the solution that won them the award in 2011 below.
GWC Customer Recognition Awards
If you are an IBM Business Partner whose customers have used your WebSphere related products or technologies to address a business challenge or a customer who has used an IBM Business Partner WebSphere related solution to address your business challenges head on, then you could be eligible for a GWC Customer Recognition Award.
- All IBM BP nominated customers meeting the award criteria are eligible for an award.
- Customer award winners will receive a plaque marking their achievement in a special Customer Awards Ceremony at Impact 2012 and an opportunity to have a professional video created with their IBM BP and featured on IBM.com and the GWC (a $15K value).
- Both the IBM BP and the customer award winners will be featured in the GWC Newsletter and special edition GWC Press Release during the week of Impact.

Catching up with KLM
The KLM Royal Dutch Airlines company comprises three businesses and two airlines (KLM and Air France) and services 71 million* passengers across the entire company. KLM itself employs 30,000 people and has an operating revenue of €7.4 million (9.5 million USD).
The KLM-Air France WebSphere installation has approximately 100 systems running 50–70 permanent projects with WebSphere per year. They have 100,000 users across three data centers and approximately 1,800 applications to manage.
That KLM found that its infrastructure and application processes to be complicated would be an understatement. They found errors in 70% of their software deployments, which cost the company time and money among other valuable resources.
The solution to their problem? KLM leveraged DeployIt — an automated application release program by XebiaLabs — and found incredible results. Incorrect configurations were completely eliminated because the development environment was connected directly to DeployIt, thereby eliminating human error and manual steps. Deployments are now streamlined; applications are now configured once and developers deploy them themselves resulting in better speed and better time-to-market, which was a very important benefit to KLM.
Between manual preparation, automation, and rework savings, KLM saw duration savings between 45–369 hours per project, depending on the project size. KLM estimates their financial savings at €650,000 (1 million USD) per year on the complete project portfolio.
KLM also saw a big increase in time-to-market. They created a new class in their economy offerings with more leg space and room to recline. This idea was realized in an incredible 6 months from idea to market, and KLM feels DeployIt was instrumental in this success.
Thanks to Ronald Bosch, Manager AOS - SPL/XK, KLM Information Services for his support and resources for this article.

February 23 Webcast: Better Together (More Than Ever): BPM & SOA with IBM BPM and WebSphere Message Broker V8
Date: February 23, 2012
Title: Better Together (More Than Ever): BPM & SOA with IBM BPM and WebSphere Message Broker V8
Time: 11 am EST (GMT -5)
To register please click here
BPM and SOA have always been better together. At the heart of an SOA are services — repeatable business tasks — like “new account opening” or “customer credit check”. These services can then be used (and re-used) in the context of multiple business process or combined to deliver new, composite processes. The key for mid-market and departmental users is that this integration approach must be easy to implement and manage. Too often enterprises have shied away from the necessary SOA approach vital to many BPM use cases because the solution has been too complex, the enterprise has been too strapped for resources or the project simply doesn’t mix with their current staff or set of skills. The combination of IBM BPM and the new WebSphere Message Broker (WMB) V8 looks to change this tune for good. Join Joe Speed and Bill Hahn as they delve into the new features and functions of WMB V8 that, when combined with IBM BPM, help deliver real business agility.

Increase the Value of Your WebSphere SOA with Governance Automation
IBM and SOA Software
SOA Software’s products provide Ready-to-use SOA Governance Automation for the IBM WebSphere SOA foundation. This allows the automation of your SOA framework from service conception all the way to service consumption. With SOA Software, you can install and configure a comprehensive SOA Governance solution for your IBM infrastructure without having to integrate a broad array of components through custom development or professional services.
IBM WebSphere customers add SOA Software’s Ready-to-use SOA Governance Automation solution to the IBM WebSphere SOA foundation to realize the following key benefits:
Ready-to-use Governance
SOA Software’s solution creates an end-to-end SOA framework from Rational, Tivoli and WebSphere products without forcing you to develop your own labor-intensive integrations. SOA Software’s products will help you make maximum use of your IBM product stack by automating the entire lifecycle of planning, building, running, and sharing services. It is ready-to-use right out of the box. You can install individual components, or the entire suite and start enjoying the benefits of an automated and governed SOA framework right away.
SOA Unification
From architects to developers to engineers, providing a unified governance solution to fuse together all the functions and technologies in your IT environment, SOA Software delivers an end-to-end solution that addresses the needs of all the constituents of your SOA family. Built by one team with a common appearance and integrated features, SOA Software provides the answer to unifying your SOA foundation.
Integrates Heterogeneous Environments
Despite the proliferation of IBM products involved in Service Oriented Architecture, most customers do not have the luxury of working in a pristine environment provided by only one vendor. And since SOA is about connecting a broad array of your IT assets it stands to reason that the application of policy and governance, as well as the automation of services requires and environment that can support not only your IBM core but also a wide array of other vendors such as SAP, Microsoft, Oracle, and open source (Redhat, etc.).
Ready-to-use SOA Governance for IBM WebSphere
IBM customers are adding SOA Software’s Portfolio Manager, Repository Manager, Service Manager and Policy Manager to provide Ready-to-use SOA Governance for their IBM platform to enhance their investment in the following ways:
- Uniform lifecycle and policy governance across existing platform investments
- Lifecycle workflows that automate all phases of service existence (plan, build, run and share)
- Seamless, heterogeneous SOA Governance, security and management integration with IBM middleware infrastructure and technologies provided by other vendors
- Enhance performance and reliability management at service level granularity
- Automate service contract provisioning and negotiation amongst consumers and business organizations
- Support standards for governance automation (UDDIv3, WS-MEX)
- Federation of business services and business organizations through a unified SOA Governance system
- Enable functional and organizational collaboration through all phases of the service lifecycle
SOA Software offers a comprehensive Ready-to-use SOA Governance Automation solution for IBM:

API Management for IBM WebSphere
APIs (public or corporate) represent a logical extension of the assets in your Service Oriented Architecture and many IBM customers are motivated to leverage these assets for broad consumption as APIs.
Plan, Build, Run, Share: the first 3 elements of the SOA life cycle are critical to a successful adoption of the SOA pattern, but the most important element in realizing the top line business benefit of this investment is share. Sharing your services as an API (public or corporate) requires technical management of the service interface, as well as the social management of the API (interface and documentation), it’s consuming developer community, and the related APIs that help developers create new and exciting applications.
Atmos.phe.re combines the best elements of collaboration, security, analytics and automation together to form an industry leading enterprise API management solution. Automation is one of the keys to this pattern as many of the services that will become APIs are hosted by the IBM SOA foundation. Merging the SOA core with an API layer via automation of publishing, documentation, security, analytics and community management significantly reduces the time, cost and complexity of public or corporate API programs. For more information on Atmos.phe.re (powered by SOA Software) and to understand how to supercharge the ROI of your SOA service investment, please visit www.soa.com/ibm.
