Scalable Caching in a Java Enterprise Environment with WebSphere eXtreme Scale:
The paradox of completing transactions faster with bigger and bigger data sets has been solved. IBM® WebSphere® eXtreme Scale V7 and IBM System x® hardware shattered the performance barrier that limited application scalability by introducing a linearly scalable high performance in-line cache to the database system. With this breakthrough new technology from IBM, developers can rapidly build a seamless, flexible in-memory data grid that scales out as their application scales unlocking them from being limited by the performance of the database. This article reports a benchmark where a synchronous in-line eXtreme Scale database cache improved client performance by 365% over direct database access. This had a peak throughput of over 2.46 million transactions per minute. Furthermore, CPU consumption on the database system was reduced by 75%, enabling other critical applications to use the newly freed database capacity to improve their performance as well.

SIP and HTTP Converged Services Performance Using the WebSphere Application Server
Enterprises are adding real-time communications capabilities into existing and new applications to help customers, partners and employees interact more efficiently. ..Many enterprises start down the path of communications enablement by adding "Click to Call" capabilities to their existing applications. Adding "Click to Call" to an application enables users to click on an HTML button and start a voice conversation with a physical phone, a mobile phone or a Voice over IP (VoIP) softphone.
This report is based on a benchmark for communications enabled applications that combines HTTP and SIP. The benchmark simulates people using a browser to establish a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone call and interact with a voice mail server. ... The system configuration is a three-tier model. Tier one is the load driver that simulates the activities of Web users. Tier two comprises multiple application servers that receive the requests. Unlike most web applications where the third tier is databases, the third tier for this application consists of SIP user agents that simulate the end user, the voice mail server, and the application server.
The benchmark results showcases the ability of WebSphere Application Server to provide the performance businesses demand, as well as fast development of multimodal applications utilizing frameworks such as the IBM WebSphere Application Server V7 Feature Pack for CEA.

Practical Cost Reductions for WebSphere Application Server DynaCache using eXtreme Scale: Billy Newport Explains How
Looking for ways to reduce costs and drive your business applications faster and more responsively? Replacing Dynacache Disk Offload with DynaCache using IBM WebSphere eXtreme Scale is an audio recording of a 28 minute discussion by Billy Newport, Distinguished Engineer and Architect, on how IBM WebSphere eXtreme Scale V7.0 can work with existing DynaCache applications without rewriting them. The bottom line is approximately a 70% reduction in memory costs with no need for very fast disks. Invalidation CPU costs are reduced significantly compared with disk offload based DynaCache.
More REST for eXtreme Scale
In August, we began a technical preview of REST data service for IBM® WebSphere® eXtreme Scale V7.0, which will help to expand reach of eXtreme Scale grids into a new pool of applications. The WebSphere eXtreme Scale REST data service is a Java™ HTTP service that implements Microsoft's ADO.NET Data Services. The REST data service allows any HTTP client to access a WebSphere eXtreme Scale 7.0 grid.
A new set of capabilities has just been added to the technology preview. These include:
- Relationship support: Relationships between two or more entities can now be modeled. The REST data service allows navigation and modification of entity instance relationships at runtime.
- Batch retrieval support: Multiple queries can now run within a single HTTP request and transaction, increasing performance.
- OrderBy Support: Query results can now be returned in ascending or descending order by one or more properties.
Getting access to the REST support is simple. We integrated the support into the trial download version of eXtreme Scale.

ISA Lite - A Real Timesaver!
ISA Lite, the automated data collection tool, helps you gather data required for the IBM support team to help analyze problems efficiently and quickly. ISA Lite collects everything needed to troubleshoot a problem. The file is available on your system, so you can review the file, or upload the collected information to IBM support using the attachment capability in the SR tool or using IBM FTP Servers.
Highlights:
- Less than 10 MB, takes about a minute to download
- Not a product, just an extraction, so no installation
- Just download, extract, run. You can be up and running in less than a minute
* Download ISA Lite: Under Quick Data Collection, choose a product and click the arrow

* Download the product add-on in the workbench, and go to the Data Collection view. From the three options, choose ISA Lite and the directory where to export the file. Note: If the ISA Lite selection does not display, it is not an option for that product.

The release of version 2.0 introduces a host of improvements and new functionality including:
- A Service Request (SR) portlet on the Open a Service Request page. If you have selected products that use SR, you are signed in, and you are registered with SR, you will get a view of your draft and open PMRs with links to the SR tool. If you are not registered with SR, you will see a link to the registration page.
- A text box on the left that allows you to quickly add to your product list by simply typing in the product name.
- Translated labels, instructions, and portlet titles if yourr browser language setting is set to one of 19 different languages including German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (both simplified and traditional), Czech, and Croatian.
- A Site Availability portlet within the right column that lets you know of any system related issues affecting Support Portal and its features.
- Performance improvements
My Notifications - Now Even Better!
My Notifications V5.0, released September 9, includes a number of improvements from Support Portal integration to improved Flash and RSS notifications. Remember to use your IBM ID and password to access My Notifications. Read on to find out what's new and be sure to take advantage of the additional functionality!
Here's what's new:
- Document Abstracts are now included in notification messages
- Flash documents are immediately delivered to subscribers in the form requested in their profile
- RSS feeds from the product support pages are now delivered through My Notifications RSS feeds. Subscribers continue to receive RSS feeds as always, with no action on their part
- Simplified "unsubscribe" function makes it easier to manage subscriptions

New Message Broker V7
Message Broker version 7 was announced on Oct 2 2009. Along with major product simplifications including removal of the broker database and configuration manger components. MQ 7.0.1 is fully integrated including support for built-in software HA, and new publish subscribe features. There's a much improved Application Development environment and a lightweight MQ Explorer based console for integrated MQ, MB & FTE administration, which also includes a built-in graphical performance analysis tool. New patterns support makes it easier than ever to create a solutions using a "tops-down" design approach. As you'd expect, there's a raft of new connectivity nodes, including sequencing and re-sequencing nodes, SCA nodes for WPS connectivity, an IMS node, a PHP compute node and new node facilities for connectivity to WebSphere Business Monitor. Finally, there are some great enhancements to SAP, Siebel and PeopleSoft nodes for ERP connectivity. Read all the details here.
