WUG Leader Profile: Guido Puglielli

WUG Italy
Community Member Since: 2006

Guido is a SOA Certified Associate & Solution Designer, with more than 10 years of experience on products and technologies from the IBM WebSphere brand. He works at Primeur, an ISV with more than 20 years experience in the MFT (Managed File Transfer) arena, where he is involved in building either customer integration solutions using WebSphere technologies, or products that exploit IBM WebSphere technologies in the MFT space.

In the last 18 months Guido has led a team of Primeur employees and IBMers focused on growing the Italian WebSphere Community. WebSphere User Group Italy usually holds 6 meetings per year, typically hosted at customer/community members' sites, where we discuss technology, product updates, customer experiences, and live demos. This approach has led to over 100 new members joining the group in the first six months of 2008.

Redbooks from WUG UK

Colin Renouf, one of the leaders of WUG UK, has published 2 Redbooks on AIX and WAS. Abstracts and links to his work appear below. He can be contacted at colin.renouf@lineone.net

Running IBM WebSphere Application Server on System p and AIX: Optimization and Best Practices
Running IBM WebSphere Application Server on System P and AIX is primarily about the best practices for AIX and System P WAS deployments, but one of the larger sections, WAS "Under The Hood", is the first public explanation of how WAS as a whole works - and this has the backing of IBM (see the acknowledgements). So, it's not just about AIX but covers all other platforms too. Whilst the JVM explanations are specific to IBM JVMs, the rest of the WAS architecture is explained from the ground up starting with the underlying Eclipse/OSGI runtime, then the core WAS runtime that provides most of the implementations, and then the extensions that form the core web and EJB containers. Consider this as documenting the undocumented for problem determination purposes. Even the underlying deployment XML files and JNI shared objects are explained along with how WAS uses each of these components in its startup. It also looks forward to the forthcoming WebSphere Application Server 7 product that has essentially the same architecture but is Eclipse 3.2.1 based.

Case Study: AIX and WebSphere in an Enterprise Infrastructure
Case Study: AIX and WebSphere in an Enterprise Infrastructure looks at how the WebSphere products interact and should be deployed, primarily on AIX but the same principles apply to a Xen-based Linux environment, including examples of how to use portal to talk to Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server, how different products in the WebSphere family interact, and how to secure the environment. How to size a deployment for WAS in terms of instances, CPUs, etc is aimed at AIX but the core "formula" works the same on all platforms.

The Global WebSphere Community is proud to present a unique service in the industry: Ask the Experts Sessions. By teaming with a host company, we are able to make a large number of experts, well-versed around a specific topic, available to Community members for a day-long question and answer session. The experts are split into focused groups, organized around a central theme, event, or technology. GWC members are then free to ask them any questions they want, and the responses are recorded and made available for all GWC members. Please browse our archives of past Ask the Experts sessions, and keep an eye out for future sessions!
